Pretty Pinterest Picks

I'm sure most of us know of Pinterest and/or visit it frequently, or even spend 3 hours a day getting sucked into it! There's no shame my friends, I think it's happened to the best of us all at one point.

I often visit Pinterest to gain inspiration for a project I have in mind, but am not really sure where to take it. Thankfully, people from all over the world have pinned all the best ideas for us to emulate in one handy spot!

This week, I was cruisin' the boards for some Valentine photo inspiration. Call me a nut, but I desperately wanted to snap some lovey photos of my kids just for the occasion!

Soooooo, a lengthy time of pinning, then getting distracted from my course by other cool things I saw, and then finally some more pinning, I did find a few photos to inspire me in my project for the day.

What drew me in with this, was the focus and composition. And what a simplistic, but elegant way to demonstrate the word love. This is originally from Amelia Kay Photography on Etsy and I must say, she really inspired me with this shot!

I feel that my heart is beginning to go pitter-patter with silly ideas!

This gave me one of those "OH DUH!" moments. Why didn't I think of using Sweethearts candies in my little shoot? Good thing there's always Pinterest to point me in the right direction hee hee. Thank you Brenda Accuncius Photography for showing off your amazing work so that someone could pin it and so on and so forth and in the end, I could be VERY inspired indeed.

So what DID I come up with in the end? We plan to put these in some cards to send off to a few relatives to show how much we looooooove them!

BTW...I don't usually put bright lipstick on my little girl, but the "plan" was to put some kissy lips on her little brother's face....which he ended up not really being into that idea haha. Gosh, I wonder why? Doesn't every 4 year old boy dream of getting kissy lips from his sister? He ALMOST let her do it too. I think once he realized our intentions to get lipstick all over his cheeks, he was not so keen on the kissing idea! ROFL.

Web Sharpening Photoshop Action Freebie

Hi there! I've had requests to bring back my web sharpening freebie again, so here it is! This is a set of three Photoshop Actions to help sharpen and pump up the saturation for posting your layouts in galleries. These are simple commands, but I know that to the average beginner scrapper, many tasks can seem daunting when just starting out. It is also a great time-saver for you seasoned scrappers as well!

These actions will work with Adobe Photoshop CS versions. They will work on 12x12 or other proportionately sized pages. They will not work well with 8.5x11 or unproportionately sized pages and will create some undesired warping. These actions will resize, sharpen and bump up your saturation all with the push of a button.

To install actions, navigate to C>program files>Adobe>Photoshop>Presets>Actions

Copy the .ATN file included with your download to that location. The next time you load Photoshop, you will be able to choose the action from your actions drop down menu.

September Template Challenge!!!

How about something new... a little change of pace? It's been quite a while since I've posted a challenge, but I am finding that I do so love to make templates. So why not a template challenge?

Templates are a GREAT tool. At least I think they are. I used to never use them. I had a problem with imagining a template into a layout without taking the template literally. But I'm really happy that, as a scrapper, I can take a template and use it as a basis for what I want to create now. And they're a great time saver for someone like me who always has something she needs to be doing. Sometimes creating my own pages can take a backseat to everything else, but starting out with a template helps jog me into actually creating something worthwhile with my cherished memories, without taking hours to agonize over the layout.

Here you'll find a list of all the different words and acronyms related to digiscrapping. Bookmark this post as a reference point all you newbies!

Layout: A finished scrapbook page, digital or not

Scraplift: Taking ideas from another layout to make your own layout

PS: Adobe Photoshop

PSE: Adobe Photoshop Elements

PSP: Corel Paint Shop Pro

Element: Also known as embellishment; the items that come in a kit to "dress up" a layout, i.e. buttons, brads, ribbons, etc. They come in PNG format.

Papers: 12x12 jpeg files that may or may not resemble actual paper. They will usually make up the "background" of a layout, but also may be "cut" into strips and other shapes or layered to decorate a page.

Kits: Also may be referred to as digital kits, digiscrap kits. An entire set of elements and coordinating papers to be purchased/downloaded for the purpose of creating digital layouts.

Quickpages: A pre-made layout in png format with spaces for the user to simply drag and drop their photos into. You may also see brag book albums/pages that are similar, but come in a set most of the time.

TOU: Stands for terms of use. Every kit comes with one and this refers to a set of guidelines about how the artist's work may be used. It is recommended that you read every designer's tou when you get a kit and give proper credit to them when posting your work in online galleries by leaving their designer name and the name of the kit in the description area.

CT: A designer's creative team; a group of people who the designer has recruited to make layouts with their products and post them to online galleries in order to help advertise the product used.

RAK: Random Act of Kindness. Many designers do RAK giveaways when they release a new kit.

Toot: A forum post to say what you won in a RAK or contest of some sort.

LO: Short for layout

BOM: Book of Me

QP: Short for Quickpage

LOTW OR LOTD: Layout of the week or layout of the day, many digital scrapbook shop forums have contests every week to find the best layout from their gallery.

BB: Short for Brag Book

Template: A guideline to assist in making digital layouts. Usually come in photoshop format complete with layers already in place to give the layout maker an idea of how to create their layout. A good template designer will also include separate png files from the template too though.

Speed Scrap: A challenge to create a layout in 2 hours. The first hour instructions are given every 5 minutes and the second hour is to finish up and submit a finished layout. Many digital scrapbook shop forums host these.

PSD: photoshop document

Brushes: files used for photoshop that "brush" a certain shape on the canvas.

Styles: preset files for photoshop that change a layer's style (the way it looks). Glitter and acryllic styles are very popular. For example, you can draw a plain circle in photoshop, but add a preset style to it, like glitter and you would then have a circle of glitter instead with just a click of a mouse.

Actions: preset files for photoshop. Simply running an action by pressing play can give you any number of results. There are actions for editing photos, making elements, the possibilities are endless. With all the steps recorded, it takes all the guesswork out of what you are doing with your current project.

Masks: single layer files that can be used in any program. The user "clips" a photo or paper to the shape of the mask. In photoshop this is done by placing your layer you want clipped over the mask layer and right clicking on it in the layers palette and selecting "create clipping mask."

Alpha: A set of digital alphabet stickers/elements to create fun and interesting titles and journaling in a layout.

PU: Stands for Personal Use. This is part of the terms in which you may or may not use a kit

S4H/S4O: Stands for Scrap for Hire/Scrap for Others. If you have or would like to start a business making layouts for other people, you would need kits that are ok for this use.

CU: Stands for Commercial Use. This refers to items that are ok for another designer to use in aiding them to create their own kits,.

Blog Train: Usually offering one big freebie, you have to follow the links on the participating designers' blogs to get all the pieces.

PP: participation prize, usually given for playing along in a speedscrap or other challenge at store forums

NSD: national scrapbooking day

Wordart: a phrase or quote made into an artful element to add to your layouts.

Text path: Typing your text in a shape or maybe a curved line to add interest to a layout.

Extraction: Removing the background or taking your subject from a photo so they stand alone.

Hybrid: Using digital products to make paper scrapbooking projects.

Credits: Who made the products you used for your project. Very important to list credits!

Embellie or Ellie: Short for embellishment or element

Collab: A kit made by more than one designer

Overlay: A texture or something you can place on top of another item in a photo editing program and blend the two together.

Selective Coloring: A photo edit to make a black and white photo with pops of color.

Enable: For creative teams; advertising the designers they work for.
